Drug, alcohol and tobacco misuse (generically known as substance misuse) is a universal phenomenon that affects all levels of society (Rassool, 2002).

Increasing drug use generally has caused a host of social, behavioural, psychological and physical problems among populations. Nurses are usually the first point of contact for clients with potential or unrecognised substance use problems whether in primary health care or hospital settings. Therefore, if nurses are to respond to the health needs of these people there must be adequate drug and alcohol-related education in undergraduate and postgraduate nursing curricula (English National Board, 1996).
